The Kyoto Protocol
The Kyoto Protocol is an international agreement to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Each country has a target for limiting or reducing their carbon
Each country has a certain number of units of carbon they can release - their carbon quota. If they don't release their full quota, they can sell these units to other countries or they can store them for the future.
Countries can get carbon credits for removing CO2 from the atmosphere by planting trees or for reducing CO2 emissions by using renewable energy.
The Paris Agreement
The united nations climate change conference took place in Paris 2015 and negotiated the Paris Agreement. The 195 attending nations agreed to:
- limit global warming to less than 2C
- Stop burning fossil fuels by2100
- Aim to have zero net carbon emissions by 2100
