Solar Eclipses

  • Occasionally the moon is positioned directly between the Earth and the sun.
  • When this happens, the shadow of the moon falls on Earth.
  • People who are in the shadow will see the moon blocking the light of the sun.
  • This is called a solar eclipse.

Lunar Eclipses

  • A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth is directly between the moon and the sun.
  • When this happens Earth casts a shadow on the moon.
  • As a result sections of the moon that are usually illuminated appear black.
