Solar Eclipses
- Occasionally the moon is positioned directly between the Earth and the sun.
- When this happens, the shadow of the moon falls on Earth.
- People who are in the shadow will see the moon blocking the light of the sun.
- This is called a solar eclipse.
Lunar Eclipses
- A lunar eclipse occurs when Earth is directly between the moon and the sun.
- When this happens Earth casts a shadow on the moon.
- As a result sections of the moon that are usually illuminated appear black.
