Cold Climates

There are two types of Cold Climates:

  • Boreal
  • Tundra

Boreal

  • 55 -  60 degrees, north of the equator
  • Summers are very short with long days, 5 - 15 degrees
  • Low precipitation 400mm/year
  • Natural vegetation, is the Taiga, an evergreen coniferous tree
  • Beavers, Martens, Bears
  • Example of Country: Finland 

Tundra

  • Summers are short and cool, rarely above 5 degrees
  • Winters are long and cold, as low as -35 degrees
  • Large temperature range
  • Precipitation (snow) less than 250mm/year
  • Little vegetation because of extreme cold
  • Animals - reindeer, arctic fox, polar bears, wolves
  • Sealife -  Norwhales, Seals
  • Example of Country: North pole (arctic), South Pole (Antarctica), Extreme Northern part of Canada, Northern and midlands of Russia.
