Neutralisation
Neutralisation - is a reaction where an acid and a base react to form a neutral solution of salt and water.
Salt is a substance where the hydrogen of an acid is replaced by a metal ion. In the reaction between hydrochloric acid (HCI) and sodium hydroxide (NaCI) is formed.
Everyday neutralisation reactions
- Sodium bicarbonate is produced in the pancreas and the liver to neutralise the hydrochloric acid from the stomach when it reaches the small intestine.
- When you have heartburn, you can take calcium carbonate from Rennie or Gaviscon to neutralise the excess stomach acid which causes the heartburn.
- Vinegar can be used to neutralise alkaline wasp stings.
