As a river moves from source to the sea, it transports its load:

1.  Traction

  • Large pebbles and stones are rolled and dragged along the river bed by the force of the water known as traction.

2.  Saltation

  • Small pebbles are bounced along the river bed. This method is known as saltation.

3.  Suspension

  • Tiny particles are held in suspension in the water, the movement of water is fast enough to keep them from dropping to the river bed.

4.  Solution

  • Dissolved minerals like limestone are carried in solution, it cannot be seen.
