  • Advertising is how a business communicates information to consumers to encourage them to buy products and services.
  • There are 4 types of advertising; informative advertising, persuasive advertising, competitive advertising and generic advertising.

Informative Advertising

  • Informative advertising provides information about a product or service to the consumer, such as how it works.
  • It is often used to explain a new product to consumers.
  • For example, an advert for a new food product might state its ingredients.

Persuasive Advertising

  • Persuasive advertising aims to convince the consumer to buy a product or service.
  • These adverts often use inviting language and imagery.
  • They might feature a celebrity to help influence consumers.

Competitive Advertising

  • Competitive advertising aims to show that a brand's product or service is better than its competitors'.
  • For example, adverts for Fairy washing-up liquid often compare it to other brands.

Generic Advertising

  • Generic advertising promotes product categories rather than specific brands.
  • For example, Bord Bia adverts promote food with the Bord Bia Quality Mark, but do not promote the brands that produce the food.
