The Captain had his own cabin and the sailors slept on deck in the open air
Sailors often rebelled against their captain (mutiny) as the lifestyle was harsh.
Harsh discipline was used to keep the sailors in order. Men were flogged or put in chains for breaking rules and execution was common.
Food that lasted long in voyages tended to be dry and salty when the crew ran of meat or vegetables they ate a bread made of flour, salt and water.
Sickness was common, lack of freshwater led to Typhoid and the lack of foods with vitamin C led to Scurvy. This caused exhaustion, tooth loss, vomiting and eventually death.
