  • Life on Board was very tough
  • The Captain had his own cabin and the sailors slept on deck in the open air
  • Sailors often rebelled against their captain (mutiny) as the lifestyle was harsh.
  • Harsh discipline was used to keep the sailors in order. Men were flogged or put in chains for breaking rules and execution was common.
  • Food that lasted long in voyages tended to be dry and salty when the crew ran of meat or vegetables they ate a bread made of flour, salt and water.
  • Sickness was common, lack of freshwater led to Typhoid and the lack of foods with vitamin C led to Scurvy. This caused exhaustion, tooth loss, vomiting and eventually death.
