The first monks were hermits and lived in isolated places example Scelig Mhicil of the coast of Kerry.

The Monks on Scelig Mhicil  llived in beehive huts. These huts were weather proof as the stones fitted perfectly  on top of each other- the rounded shape also meant that the rain would flow of the roof and walls.

Monasteries were the centre of learning. The bible was studies.  Manuscripts ( hand written books) were studied. Metal working and stone carving produced great works of art.

Clothes - they wore a long tunic, woollen cloaks and leather sandals.

The three vows that monks took were poverty , chastity and obedience.

Work carried out by the monks were farming , making manuscripts  , metalworking and stonemasonary.

Round towers - example Clonmacnoise and Glendalough.  They were 25 - 40 meteres. The towers were used as bellfire when a handball was rung from the top of the window to call the monks to service.

High crosses  -they had carving that were used to tell religious stories an example of an high cross is St. Muidreadachs cross Monstarboice Co.Louth.
