Here’s some advice and tips for Junior Cycle science, created by a distinction student, for students aiming for distinctions in science.
1. Know the Topics
The Junior Cycle Science course covers a wide range of topics under five different strands:
- Nature of Science
- Earth and Space
- Chemical World
- Physical World
- Biological World
It’s important not to leave any topics out of your study, as anything on the syllabus can appear on your exam paper.

2. Get Your Timing Right
The final exam is two hours long, giving you plenty of time to complete the paper. Take your time, and don’t worry if you can’t answer any questions, just move on.
In the 2019 SEC sample paper, it was recommended to spend 50 minutes on section A, and 70 minutes on section B of the paper.
3. Use the Formulae and Tables
You will be provided with a copy of the Formulae and Tables book. Make sure to avail of this book in your exam as it is very useful for the chemistry and physics questions.
4. Test Yourself
On the dreaded lead up to the exam, don’t waste time reading through your textbook.
Instead, you should test yourself. You can do this by using exam papers, or our pre-exam checklist, which you can find at the end of our comprehensive science notes.
